  1. NSW Maritime puts Sydney Harbour yachtsmen in extreme danger

    Sail-World &bull Dec 15, 2011

This is a long story but is deserves recounting, because I believe that the in-action and incompetence of NSW Maritime needs exposing. This last Monday the 12th December I was fortunate enough to be a guest on Wild Oats 11 on a practice day. As we headed up the Harbour and went past the Sow and Pigs Reef (which for non nautical people is a VERY dangerous reef of rocks right in the middle of the entrance to Sydney Harbour and is just below water most of the time) I noticed that the north cardinal mark post was missing, and a… Full Story »

  2. The Adventures of SV Salt: Anchored down for a while

    SailBlogs &bull Dec 14, 2011

We have made it to Lizard Island and are planning on staying here for a week or so. It was a little interesting coming in here during the night but we have made it through the reef without any issues, having radar and gps made a huge difference. There are only a couple of other boats around, which is quite unusual for Lizard as you usually have to try and squeeze in somewhere. Maybe there is something we don't know... We beat the southerly change and I think when I wake up in the morning I will be… Full Story »

  3. Atlantic Challenge 2011 / Part 4 Madeira to Tenerife

    TripSailor &bull Dec 12, 2011

I'd enjoyed a lovely week in Madeira, made all the better by the great people there. I wasn't asked to pay for any berthing charges (always a bonus) and made use of the public showers off the swimming beach. It was great to finally be in a climate warm enough to swim in the sea in comfort! Jon had been a great friend while I was there, and I valued his company. One evening he came down on his very new, very expensive looking sports [motor] bike. I was admiring it when he promptly offered to let me take it for… Full Story »

  8. Atlantic Challenge 2011 / Part 3 (#1/2) Cascais to Porto Santo

    TripSailor &bull Nov 30, 2011

I saw Pascal and his crew on the pontoon, and they appeared to be in a hurry. On asking "where's the fire" (and then explaining the expression) he replied that unless they checked out by 14.00hrs marina policy was to charge for another night. Now it would be a shocking waste to pay another night's fee for the couple of hours myself, so I followed suit. Steaming round to the arrival's berth on full power, Pascal & co caught my lines and told me to run. I made it dead on time. I finished final preparations on the arrivals' berth… Full Story »

  10. Skalliwag adventures: End of the 2011 Sailing Season

    SailBlogs &bull Nov 21, 2011

Well the 2011 sailing season on board Skalliwag is over. Said goodbye to SCM and moved the boat over to Z's. Between transporting the boat to Md, the 3 month delay at SCM recommissioning the boat, the 2 month electronics ugrade at Z's and the earthquake there was not a lot of time spent on the boat. Hopefully 2012 will be better! Over the winter planning on giving Skallliwag a bottom job, new mainsail, AIS and VHF with remote mike at the helm. The caprail… Full Story »

  11. S/V Si Bon: Change of plans; the decision

    SailBlogs &bull Nov 18, 2011

On our way to La Paz Sharon and I stopped at a beautiful cove called Auga Verde. While at Auga Verde Sharon told me that she thought it would be a good idea for her to do an overnight sail before we crossed the Sea of Cortez from La Paz to Matzatlan, a passage of somewhere between 2-3 days total. I completely agreed with her, as although she did do some night sailing from San Carlos to Santa Rosalia, it was not an all-nighter. So we changed plans, we decided that we would leave Auga Verde on Wednesday morning, sail… Full Story »

  12. SAILAWAY: Lobster

    SailBlogs &bull Nov 17, 2011

Fresh Lobster from Simon who cooked it for us as it was too big to fit in our pots, and mangrove oysters. We were getting a bit worried by 5pm as lobster was supposed to arrive at 4pm but that was obviously Carriacou time as they were delivered promptly at 5.30 pm by Simon who also opened the oysters and is a great fan of Ronald Reagan. Had hoped to stop at Isle de Rhonde but with 25knts of wind was… Full Story »

Sue and Terry: If you were standing half way between the fort and the bridge, you'd be looking at us!! Off to check in now and go for a good walk. This pic is one of the homes along the waterway. Not too shabby! That was just about where that little boat was playing rocking horse the day were there! Wish we were sailing along with you for a while but our day will come.… Full Story »

  15. Friends Arrive, Head is Fixed and We're on our Way

    MadCap Sailing &bull Nov 16, 2011

What a difference a couple of days makes! From being a little discouraged on Monday, to being excited on Tuesday, to being underway on Wednesday, it has been quite the tumultuous few days. The first excellent event was Jim's call down the companionway, "Come quick! There's a sailboat coming up the creek!" Now this might not sound too exciting in itself, but we knew Nomades was due at Tiger Point on Tuesday for haulout. Sure enough, it was our good friends Mireille and Christian, from Trident Yacht Club, Ontario arriving here in Fernandina Beach. What a joy it was to… Full Story »
