Home for Christmas
MadCap Sailing &bull Dec 15, 2011
We're really glad we made the decision to leave Madcap at Harbortown Marina in Ft Pierce. She is safe and secure there and in good company - Nancy and Don on Maja (Bayfield 40) were on our dock when we left and we saw another Bayfield 36 in the yard. Ed and Karin (Passages) are also there, and Ed even drove us to the airport for our trip home. What a good guy! We're loving our time with family and friends at home in Halifax and fortunately, Jim is feeling almost back to normal now so he can enjoy it… Full Story »

JUNESSA is staying dry for the winter!: FLYING OVER AFGHANISTAN
SailBlogs &bull Dec 15, 2011
My newest job location.... Kandahar Province, Afghanistan... It ALMOST like flying around Hawaii... except no palm trees, no water, very little green... In all honesty, it's very beautiful from the air! I would love to fly around with the doors off and a good camera in my hands!!! The light here can be so dramatic! Art Work at Port Townsend, Washington... Winter is on it's way! I'm starting to settle down in my new job in Afghanistan... The sand and dust was really kicking my butt at first, but i'm starting to get used to it. The country has a… Full Story »

Sound Effect does the big U: Panama canal pix
SailBlogs &bull Dec 14, 2011
Monday morning I got up at dawn as is my custom to see this Catamaran aground on the reef behind me. The picture doesnt really do it justice but as I looked at it the small reef waves were breaking right at the boat. I pumped up and pumped out the dinghy (it had been raining all night) and… Full Story »

Azure II: Back in Black
SailBlogs &bull Dec 14, 2011
We had the most remarkable Zen experience last night. Imagine this; you are surfing down a wave at 11 knots listening to AC/DC with the spinnaker up. The catamaran feels like a Porsche at that speed as you are focusing on hitting the next wave as it goes by - or in the words of George Surfer Bean - Linking waves. The waves are about 10 feet tall at their peaks so there is lots of fun to be had if you hit it right. Then out of the corner of your eye you see something jump. I ducked at… Full Story »

SV Kokomo - Denny & Becky: Spinnaker Run
SailBlogs &bull Dec 14, 2011
On our way to Isla Maquina, we were able to get our spinnaker up. It was so nice to see it still was in one piece after about six months in the sock. We had it up for three hours going 6 knots. After the wind shifted we took the spinnaker down, I caught a tuna! Thank you all for your concerned e-mail messages. I will post the results when I know,… Full Story »

Becky and I got new bathing suits when we went to Panama. We have been wearing the same suits for 15 months (two each) and they are worn out. I never thought I would wear out a… Full Story »

You Just Never Know
MadCap Sailing &bull Dec 3, 2011
You never know what's going to come at you next - good or bad - and we've had some of each this week. First, the bad: Jim's little intestinal bug turned out to be a big one that has laid him low for almost a week now. As a result of the antibiotics he took for an ear infection back in Fernandina Beach in early Nov, the good bacteria in his gut were destroyed along with the bad bacteria in his ear! So after a couple of weeks of feeling fine, he got sick again, and instead of shaking it,… Full Story »

On building your own boat and swimming against the tide of popular opinion...
Boat Bits &bull Nov 30, 2011
I am the 99%, Robert Reich continues to make sense, the Senate on the other hand is FUBAR (or as my Mom used to say, Batshit crazy), and the word for today is dehumanization... Over at the ever running forum thread of "Cruising on $500" the current point of discussion seems to… Full Story »

JUNESSA is staying dry for the winter!: ON THE HARD
SailBlogs &bull Nov 22, 2011
JUNESSA sitting pretty on the hard.... I didn't do much work on the boat while I was "HOME" this time, so JUNESSA looks pretty much as she did all summer. I think the next big ticket item will be to drop a few 'boat-bucks' on a new Cape Horn wind vane!!! I'm finally convinced that I will need one to sail the 7-seas! I have two autopilots that worked fine during my Inside Passage trip a couple years ago but I learned a lot about nasty seas and high winds… Full Story »
