Calypso Heads South!: Catching the westbound freight
SailBlogs &bull Sep 6, 2010
Feeling like latter day whalers, Christine, Meg and the Captain were up at first light to catch the favorable tide. A few gazillion gallons slosh back and forth through LI Sound several times a day and prudent sailors are hoping the train is going their way. Big VMG as we passed the Race and central LI Sound. Flat calm motoring but better than bashing to windward tomorrow in 15-20 on the nose. Of course, every train has a… Full Story »

S/V Go For Broke: Anticipating Departure
SailBlogs &bull Sep 6, 2010
Since are return to Oahu, Captain Lynn and I have been working from dawn to well after dusk to get the last minute repairs and equipment upgrades done. We got our sails back from the sail repair loft and we will be installing the genoa on the auto-furling today. We are nearly finished installing a new ICOM 710 Single-Side-Band radio which will enable us to communicate to similar systems around the globe from our boat anywhere that we are. This robust system will also allow us to maintain email correspondence and… Full Story »

Taya's Sailing Adventures: HMS Surprise, San Diego
SailBlogs &bull Sep 4, 2010
We cycled to downtown San Diego this week and visited the HMS Surprise. It is a replica of an English Fregate which is 179 feet long and 33 feet wide. It was used for the production of the film "Captain and Commander" starring Russell Crow. Definately worth a visit! We are now using the dinghy to go shopping for groceries. It shortens the walk or the bicycle ride and is faster.… Full Story »

SV THIRD DAY: Sunrise to Sunset
SailBlogs &bull Sep 4, 2010
Another driving trip up Baja came to an end yesterday evening, as I pulling into Santa Rosilia just as the sun was hitting the horizon and welcoming me back to Mexico with another fabulous sunset. A great sunset wasn't me only welcome back, and before the car rental car had even turned off my kids and other cruisers were on their way over to say hello. It may not have been their eagerness to see me that brought everyone over, but to see if I had brought back their wanted stuff and to check out my wreaked rental car. I… Full Story »

SV THIRD DAY: The Capt's Rumored Return
SailBlogs &bull Sep 2, 2010
It's a good thing that Lori and the crew are getting along so well without me, because as each planned return day comes and goes, my stay here in San Diego gets more tiring. It's not that I don't mind the cool weather; it's just that my mind is still in Cruiser mode, while my body has been tortured into real-life-work mode. But it's time to end this San Diego work run and get back to THIRD DAY if only for… Full Story »

How we survived the Pacific Cup
EVK4 SuperBlog &bull Sep 1, 2010
Everyone knows there are a lot of dangers out on the open ocean: whales, pirates, container ships, airborne aquatic simians, rogue waves and bad helmsmen who crash sailboats in less than 30 knots of wind are the most common. But… Full Story »

North Bar Halibut Outside the Gate 8/20/10
SF Boater &bull Sep 1, 2010
Went halibut fishing with Captain Perry, deckhand Mikey, and the Sea Turtle outside the gate on the north bar. Yet another great reason to go fishing on the turtle is that Captain Perry has a bait receiver. What that means is that even if you cannot buy live bait, Perry will have live bait. Live bait is essential. After a minor bit is technical difficulty, we headed out the golden gate to the north bar. We were… Full Story »

SV THIRD DAY: I am Captain, Hear Me Roar
SailBlogs &bull Aug 31, 2010
I am Captain, hear me roar! A quick note to say I have done something that I had never thought I would be able to do. As you know, Rich has a way with the written word and he talks as much as he writes. OK, maybe he talks even more than he writes. He is a Southbound Net Controller (or at least he will be again when he gets back) and the Southbound Net Manager (same thing, he will get back into the groove when he is back home with us) so he talks a whole lot. I have… Full Story »

Cruising to Calm: Settling In

I've learned that making a 'living' is not the same as 'making a life'." Maya Angelou. This is the story of the Brown family adventure. We have pulled roots in NY and are taking our two kids ages 4 1 on a five year cruise. Things have gone back to normal. We are no longer on the island, the kids are in school and O is working like a madman. It is hard to believe that we have been here since January the time has flown by. Sunrise: a dream fullfilled: The rocks

We had a meandering sail today in near Port Clyde then up through the Muscles Passage and into here. So, we sailed with the spinnaker in the morning and motored for an hour in the afternoon. Bill prepares to take down the spinnaker after a 9 hour sail East. The captain has many responsibilities... Mostly they are concerns for the crew and their comfort. This Captain is up early wondering about the weather.… Full Story »
